Dunk 1.JPGIt seems that there were a lot of people waiting for their chance to dunk Bill Schiavone of the SchiavoneDiamond Team at Downtown Oakville's Midnight Madness on Friday, July 15th. People were pre-purchasing their tickets in anticipation of Bill's arrival on the perch. Along with Dan Ferrone, Roy Tjoa and others, Bill was volunteering at the Swim For Mental Health's dunk tank booth. Temperatures that night were perfect and enjoyable, but the water in the dunk tank was near freezing!  Bill was a good sport though, having been dunked at least 50 times.

Frank Zamuner's 3rd annual Swim for Mental Health event will take place on November 24, 25 & 26 at Appleby College Pool.  After a triple bypass operation, Frank found himself suffering from depression and is now raising awareness and funds for the Mental Health program at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, where he received excellent care. You can visit their website for more information at www.swimformentalhealth.com.

Thank you to everyone that came out and bought tickets for this event. Over $2,000 was raised for the program, but the joy and satisfaction of hitting that target must have been priceless.

With the snow storm looming tonight, you might need some help digging yourself out. If you live in Oakville or Burlington good friend and client Tim Danter can help you out. His rates are really reasonable, especially if you only want the end of the driveway done after the plows come by. Tim was estimating that the windrow from the street plow could be 60 cm, especially if we do in fact get 30 cm dropped. Tim will be out all night plowing, so the best way to get him is on his cell. If you want him to dig you out call 905-330-1596 or send him an e-mail with your address timdanter@cogeco.ca. This storm is supposed to be a doozy - the MTO has already started emergency procedures!

New Central Public School hosted the annual "Wake up to Aids Pancake Breakfast" to a sold out crowd of 300+ on December 1st, 2010 - World Aids Day! This amazing event was sponsored by local businesses: Denny's (Cross Ave.), Jubilee Fruit Market and the Schiavone Diamond Real Estate Team. New Central students, staff and their families enjoyed breakfast of pancakes, sausage, fresh orange juice and hot chocolate. Over $1,500.00 was raised in support of World Aids Day, with all proceeds going to Oomama, a volunteer organization of Grandmothers led by the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The Oomama Grandmothers Campaign supports African grandmothers who are raising grandchildren who have lost their parents to HIV AIDS.

The Oomama Grandmothers performed a special dance and New Central students and staff, including Halton District School Board Superintendent, Stuart Miller, made presentations to share information about the HIV AIDS pandemic in Africa and to raise awareness for this important cause.

Many Oakville residents are smiling today after news that the proposed Oakville Power Plant has been stopped. After strong opposition from the community, the Liberals announced yesterday that plans to bulid a gas-fired power plant in Oakville have changed. "I'm tremendously pleased to announce, on behalf of the provincial government, that the proposed Oakville power plant has been stopped," local Liberal MPP Kevin Flynn told a news conference in Oakville yesterday.
