New Central Public School hosted the annual "Wake up to Aids Pancake Breakfast" to a sold out crowd of 300+ on December 1st, 2010 - World Aids Day! This amazing event was sponsored by local businesses: Denny's (Cross Ave.), Jubilee Fruit Market and the Schiavone Diamond Real Estate Team. New Central students, staff and their families enjoyed breakfast of pancakes, sausage, fresh orange juice and hot chocolate. Over $1,500.00 was raised in support of World Aids Day, with all proceeds going to Oomama, a volunteer organization of Grandmothers led by the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The Oomama Grandmothers Campaign supports African grandmothers who are raising grandchildren who have lost their parents to HIV AIDS.

The Oomama Grandmothers performed a special dance and New Central students and staff, including Halton District School Board Superintendent, Stuart Miller, made presentations to share information about the HIV AIDS pandemic in Africa and to raise awareness for this important cause.

It's that time of year again for kids and parents to get back into the routine of school, homework, extra-curricular activies and regular bedtimes. I'm one of the lucky ones whose children are actually looking forward to returning to school and all the socializing that goes along with it. There have been a great deal of changes to the schools throughout Halton Region and many students will be transitioning to new schools this year, including mine. As with any more, be it to a new school or a new home and community, there is always an adjustment period.

What can make that adjustment easier is if you, kids and parents alike, do your "homework"! The schooling options in Oakille and across Halton Region are endless. You can find everything from smaller schools; state of the art, brand new schools; french immersion; faith-based; to private. We all want the best or our kids and we all have different ideas of what the best is so putting some time and effort into investigating all of the possibilities when relocating is essential.
